Reporting for Banner
Every office runs its own Banner reports, before the move to SaaS and after it
Registrars, aid officers, and budget managers run and modify their own reports with no Banner seat and no database login, while your team keeps the definitions and the permissions. The reports, the state submissions, and the workflows you have built carry through the migration.
The situation
What Banner institutions are usually dealing with
01
Several hundred reports, and no owner in the migration plan
The project plan lists the systems. It does not list the reports, the extracts, the interfaces, or the state submissions hanging off them, and that gap surfaces in the last month before go-live.
02
Every question routes through the people with Oracle access
A dean asks for headcount by program. The request joins a queue behind eleven others and arrives Thursday. The meeting was Tuesday.
03
The submission that cannot slip
IPEDS, state enrollment reporting, and financial aid audits arrive on their own schedule in formats that have to be exact, with funding attached to getting them right.
04
Enabling self-service has meant handing out Banner logins
People request access just to look something up. Over-provisioning becomes the normal way to say yes, and pulling it back when a role changes is manual work nobody does.
05
Nobody has inventoried what was built on the old environment
Historical data, workflows, and departmental access accumulated over fifteen years, most of it undocumented and none of it in anyone's project scope.
Governed self-service
Build it once. Decide who runs it. Everyone else stops waiting.
Argos separates who writes the query from who runs the report. Your team owns the logic, the joins, and the permissions. Every other office filters, sorts, schedules, and exports without ever seeing the schema.
Who can run what is decided in one place, at the folder and DataBlock level, and the same permissions cover the report, the dashboard, and the plain-language answer. Adding an audience means granting access, with nothing new to secure.
- Report writers build new layouts without touching queries
- Other staff run reports by selecting parameters
- Dashboard Designer builds and shares dashboards from the browser, embedded in campus portals or Banner pages
- Unlimited users and unlimited connections, with no Banner login required
“Argos is the tool of choice. It has immediately changed the way we work, in that it has consolidated data so staff don't have to do hours of compilation any longer, and everybody's looking at the same information.”

Let people ask Banner a question in plain language
A dean wants headcount by program. An analyst wants to know what changed since census. Neither should have to describe it as a reporting requirement first.
Argos Data Agent answers questions in plain language against governed Banner data, and shows the SQL behind every response so anyone can verify it before acting. For the people who would rather work with the numbers directly, Pivot Mode and Explore Data reshape a result on the spot without writing a query.
EDUCAUSE ranks the shift from reactive to proactive eighth on its Top 10, describing it as using data to explore what is likely rather than describe what has already happened. That starts with being able to ask a follow-up.
- Argos Data Agent for plain-language questions, with the SQL visible
- Pivot Mode and Explore Data for filtering, reshaping, and exporting without a new report request
- Answers grounded in governed Banner data and existing permissions, not an uploaded spreadsheet
- Dashboard Designer, Explore Data, and Pivot Mode are included with Argos at no additional cost
- Argos Data Agent is licensed separately, in Core and Advanced tiers
Compliance and delivery
The output that has to be exact, on the date it is due
IPEDS, state enrollment files, aid audits. These are not dashboards. They are files with a specification, a deadline, and funding attached.
Argos queries live Banner data and produces the formatted output those submissions require, then delivers it on a schedule so nobody is assembling one the night before.
- Real-time queries against Banner, not an overnight extract
- Fixed-width and delimited extracts that go to agencies without reformatting
- Banded PDF with your logos, grouped sections, headers, and footers for board reporting
- Scheduled delivery by email or FTP
- Cohort definitions saved once and run the same way in a future year
“Argos retrieves the student information, applies it to standardized templates, and generates the official document automatically. This frees the registration team from tasks that previously consumed hours during busy periods.”

Your reports come across. Nobody rebuilds them from memory.
Reporting logic lives in documented objects rather than in a query one person wrote and never wrote down. The definition, the joins, and the permissions are the institutional knowledge, and they stay when the person who built them moves on.
A move to Banner SaaS changes what your reporting reads from. Professional Services inventories what you run, tells you what carries over and what needs work, and scopes it before anyone commits to a date.
- Argos connects to Banner SaaS through the Ellucian Data Gateway, live on customer campuses today
- Reporting logic lives in documented, portable objects, so it stays when the person who wrote it does not
- The Banner Starter Pack ships more than 150 pre-built objects across Student, HR, Finance, Financial Aid, and Advancement, included with the license
- Professional Services scopes the conversion against your own inventory before the migration date is set
“Before Argos, it was a hoarder's closet and probably your worst nightmare. The reporting landscape in Microsoft Access and Oracle Hyperion/Brio had become the Wild West.”

Rapid application development
What Banner institutions have built instead of buying
The same DataBlock that returns a result set can take input back and drive a process. Banner campuses have used that to replace small systems, and to build departmental tools that would never have been funded on their own.
Check-in and attendance
Orientation, athletics events, fitness center usage, and music performances, recorded off a card swipe.
Data entry back into the ERP
Forms that let a department update records without anyone writing a custom web application. On-premises only.
Approval workflows
Faculty contract approval and other routes that had been living in an email chain.
Administrative utilities
Create accounts, manage groups, and reset passwords from a dashboard instead of a console.
Exception management
Find the bad or missing data, then route each case to whoever can correct it.
Financial Aid operations
ISIR tracking, Pell recalculation, and verification and disbursement tracking.
Write-back is on-premises only. Banner SaaS does not give the same update and function access, so bring the specific process and we will tell you what is possible in your target environment.

How it fits
How Argos fits with the rest of your stack
With Ellucian Insights
Insights brings data together across Ellucian products on a managed data layer. Argos works directly against your Banner environment, covering dashboards, conversational analysis, compliance output, and scheduled delivery, all built on definitions your team controls. Most institutions run both.
With a general BI tool
General-purpose BI tools are strong for exploratory analysis over a warehouse. Most higher education reporting is execution: fixed-width extracts to state agencies, banded PDFs for the board, personalized letters on a schedule.
With your current process
Direct Oracle access and a capable team is a real setup. It stops being enough when one of these arrives: At that point, extending reporting you already own is easier to defend than a new stack. EDUCAUSE ranks measured technology investment sixth on its Top 10, noting that quick-fix purchases are common and put strain on IT staff.
Trust and security
What your security and procurement reviewers will ask
The Trust Center is published and the HECVAT is available on request, so a reviewer can start before anyone schedules a call.
Permissions are enforced, never overridden
A report can only be opened by someone your team has permissioned to run it, and a view is built for the role that needs it. Nobody needs a Banner login or an Oracle account to run a report; the permissions live in Argos.
Authentication
LDAP group synchronization and SAML single sign-on, with folder-inherited permissions at object and report level across Execute, Modify, and Full tiers.
Production performance
Query queuing and priority management keep reporting activity from affecting your production Banner environment.
Data handling
FERPA-aligned access controls through the layered permission model. Encryption in transit. Masking can block objects from AI workflows, mask columns, and redact values.
Deployment
On-premises, hybrid, or Banner SaaS through the Ellucian Data Gateway. MAPS runs on infrastructure you control.
Documentation
Security documentation, subprocessor information, and compliance posture live in our Trust Center. HECVAT documentation available on request.
Frequently asked questions
Questions we get asked first
Does Argos work with Banner 9 and Ethos?
Yes. We have been a certified Ellucian Ethos Connected partner since 2020, which means Argos can surface data from any Ethos-connected system, not only Banner.
Does Argos work with Banner SaaS?
Yes, through the Ellucian Data Gateway, on live customer campuses today. The Banner Starter Pack ships 150+ pre-built objects through the CO-OP community, so you are not starting from an empty library.
What happens to our existing reports when we migrate to SaaS?
What carries over and what needs work depends on how your reports were built. Professional Services scopes it against your library.
What is included with Argos, and what is licensed separately?
One license covers the Argos Client, where your team builds DataBlocks, reports, and OLAP data cubes, and Argos X in the browser, including Dashboard Designer, Explore Data, and Pivot Mode, along with scheduling, delivery, the Argos API, and the MAPS platform. Argos Data Agent is licensed separately, in Core and Advanced tiers.
Is our Banner data used to train an AI model?
No. Data Agent uses a Zero Data Retention architecture, so institutional data submitted through the AI workflow is not retained by the model provider for training or reuse. It also honors your existing permissions, and sensitive fields can be masked or blocked from AI workflows entirely.
Do our users need Banner accounts to run reports?
No. Report access extends to every department head, advisor, recruiter, and counselor under unlimited-user licensing, without a Banner login for each one.
Do we have to choose between this and Ellucian Insights?
No. Insights aggregates data across Ellucian products on a managed layer. Argos works against your own Banner environment and covers dashboards, conversational analysis, compliance output, and scheduled delivery, on definitions your team controls. Argos can also query the Insights data layer, so you can combine them in a single report.
Can Argos write data back to Banner?
On-premises, yes. In Banner SaaS the update and function access an on-premises environment allows is not available in the same way, so bring us the specific process and we will tell you what is possible in your target environment instead of describing it in general.
Will reporting activity slow down our production Banner environment?
Query queuing and priority management exist specifically to prevent that.
What is in the Banner Starter Pack?
More than 150 pre-built reporting objects spanning Student, HR, Finance, Financial Aid, and Advancement, community-validated for Banner's actual schema.
We have several hundred reports in the old system. We cannot take on another conversion.
You do not rebuild them one for one, and the number is often smaller than the inventory suggests. The first step is an inventory: what still runs, what nobody has opened in two years, and how many of the survivors are the same query with a different filter. Institutions routinely find that several hundred legacy reports collapse into a few dozen DataBlocks, because Argos handles the variation with parameters rather than with separate reports. We convert the ones that matter first, run both systems in parallel while people get comfortable, and retire the old one when nobody is using it.
We are in the middle of a Banner SaaS migration. Should we wait?
Waiting is what turns reporting into the emergency at go-live. The reports, the state submissions, and the definitions hanging off the old environment are rarely in the migration plan, and they surface in the last month when there is no time left. Do the report inventory early, decide what is mission critical, and move that first. It is the least disruptive thing you can do during a migration and it takes a whole category of risk off the go-live list.
Can we start with one department instead of the whole campus?
Yes, and most institutions do. Start with the office whose reporting problem costs the most staff time, get it working on your own data, and expand when people in other offices start asking for access. Licensing is per institution with unlimited users, so a departmental start does not create a per-seat problem when it grows.
Who will we be working with?
People who have done your job. Our consultants and support staff came from campus IT and institutional reporting before they worked here, because higher education is the only sector we build for. Support is in-house, with no outsourced agents, and it is the thing customers raise unprompted more than anything else about us.
How long does implementation take?
It depends on your environment and how much you want live on day one, so it varies considerably from one institution to the next. The Banner Starter Pack and the CO-OP community library give you a running start. Professional Services scopes it with you.
Does this help with IPEDS and state reporting?
Yes. Fixed-width and delimited extracts formatted to agency specification, scheduled delivery, and cohort definitions that run the same way year over year. Institutions also share localized reporting assets, including OCAS and PSIS and CSER, through our community.
Can we talk to a Banner institution using this?
Yes. Ask and we will connect you with a reference customer in a comparable environment, on-premises or in SaaS.
What does it cost, and can we talk to an institution like ours?
Licensing is per institution rather than per user, and price is driven by institution size and product mix rather than headcount. Argos, Argos X, FormFusion, and IntelleCheck all carry unlimited users and unlimited connections, with no per-connection or per-report charge and nothing billed for people who only read reports. The one exception is Argos Data Agent Advanced, which is licensed per seat. Data Agent Core is unlimited. Tell us your FTE and which products you are weighing and we will give you a real figure on the first call, then put you in touch with an institution of roughly your size and ERP. Ask them about support while you are there. It is in-house, and it is the thing customers raise unprompted more than anything else.
