Improving Student Progress Visibility with Argos

Provided academic leadership with real-time visibility into student progress and program completion readiness
Enabled advisors and deans to quickly identify and support students nearing graduation
Centralized program evaluation data so departments work from a single, consistent view of student progress

The Challenge

Before implementing Argos, Alvin College faced a familiar challenge: limited visibility into student progress across programs and a reliance on manual reporting processes. Academic leaders often had to request reports and wait for them to be delivered, which meant the data they received could already be outdated by the time it arrived.

This lack of timely insight made it difficult for deans, advisors, and department chairs to clearly understand where students stood in their programs or identify those approaching completion.

Complicating matters further, traditional metrics like GPA or total credits completed did not provide an accurate picture of student progress toward graduation. Completion is tied to program requirements, and students often change programs or pursue multiple credentials, making it difficult to determine who was truly close to finishing.

Without a clear, program-level view of progress, leadership struggled to identify students nearing completion, determine which courses were needed to support them, and intervene at the right moment to help them succeed.

“What I really need is a way that I can see all the students in my programs today. Right now, what I have to do is request a report, wait for that to be delivered, and sometimes that information may already be stale.”

The Solution

With Argos, Alvin College created a centralized reporting solution that gives academic leadership a clear, real-time view of student progress and graduation readiness.

The team developed a comprehensive Student Progress and Completion report in Argos that integrates directly with their student information system. Rather than recreating complex calculations, the report pulls existing program evaluation results and presents them in a structured, easy-to-use format. To ensure the information remains current and reliable, Alvin College also incorporated automated overnight BEVL processing as part of the overall solution.

The report provides visibility into key indicators such as:

  • Program requirements
  • Applied credits toward the program
  • Credits currently in progress
  • Remaining credits needed for completion
  • Graduation-relevant GPA
  • Evaluation status and program status

This approach allows users across the institution to analyze student progress from a single, consistent source of information. Advisors can see individual student details during meetings, department chairs can monitor progress across programs, and deans and executive leadership can view broader trends across departments.

The report also allows leaders to quickly identify students nearing completion and reach out directly with support or encouragement. By making this information easy to access, Alvin’s teams can intervene earlier and ensure students stay on track.

“We’re not having to do any fancy calculations. We’re just pulling stuff that’s already been pre-calculated by Colleague. It ensures that the Registrar,  Financial Aid, and Advising Offices are all seeing the same kind of information.”

The Results

Argos helped Alvin College turn complex academic data into clear, actionable information for leadership and advising teams.

Academic leaders gained immediate visibility into student progress across programs. Advisors can quickly identify students nearing completion and provide timely support.
Program-level reporting provides a clearer picture of graduation readiness than traditional student-level metrics. Departments now work from a shared, consistent view of evaluation data. Leadership can identify course demand based on remaining program requirements.

By making program evaluation data easier to access and interpret, Argos has strengthened collaboration across departments and improved how the institution supports students on their path to completion.

“Being able to identify those students and give that list to deans and advisors allows them to provide the support students need to finish.”

The Future

Alvin College plans to continue expanding its use of Argos to support institutional growth and student success initiatives.

Future enhancements will allow the team to analyze multiple active programs per student, making it easier to identify opportunities for students to complete additional certificates or credentials. The institution also plans to add new filters and reporting capabilities to help leadership monitor completion trends and academic progress even more closely.

“Argos centralizes the evaluation output and presents it in a structured, usable format. Leadership can see where students stand and take action.”

VP, Information Technology, Alvin College

By continuing to build on its Argos foundation, Alvin Community College is strengthening its ability to turn data into action and ensure students receive the guidance they need to complete their programs.
